Professional work, exceptional people, and fantastic customer service! They took a 4 yr fence that had mold and mildew in many areas and cleaned it first, then stained it a few days later. It came out lovely and we get so many compliments from neighbors!!
This company did an outstanding job staining our fence here in Greer. They showed up on time, worked efficiently, and left everything clean. Adrian of Superior Stain Solutions did an outstanding job on two fences for us. One fence was brand new and only required staining while the other existing fence required it to first be washed. We use penetrating stains from Expert Stain and Seal and Sherwin-Williams, and stain both sides when that is the job. You get one flat price before we start.
Most fences around Greenville and Spartanburg are pressure-treated pine, with some cedar. Both grey fast in our sun and humidity if they are left bare. New pressure-treated pine is wet when it goes up, so we meter it and stain once it reads under 13%, often within the first few months, not a year later.
Cedar is usually ready sooner. Either way, a penetrating oil soaks into the grain and weathers slowly instead of peeling like paint.
Our base price is a 6 ft privacy fence stained on both sides: $9.60 a foot with our Essential level. Charleston fences price the same.
Shadowbox, board-on-board, and Charleston board-on-board cost about 25% more, because there is more wood and more edges in every foot. Farm and rail fences cost about 15% less, since most of the run is open.
Height and sides change it too. Each foot over 6 ft adds about 20%, and staining only one side takes about 35% off. Gates are measured in with the run.
Most fences we see have greyed some, so the wash is part of the job, not a separate trip to book. We soft wash instead of blasting with high pressure, which raises the grain and can gouge pine.
A cleaner takes off the dead fibers and mildew, a brightener opens the wood, and then it dries before we stain. The wash adds $2.00 a foot on a privacy fence ($3.00 on shadowbox and board-on-board), and usually about a day for drying.
New wood and anything oiled before gets a penetrating oil: Exotic Timber Oil at the Essential level, EXPERT Stain & Seal or EXPERT Log & Timber Oil as upgrades. If your fence already has a water-based stain on it, we stay with water-based, starting with SW Woodscapes Solid Color, since oil will not soak through it. See our three stain levels side by side.
For color, we bring samples to the estimate and put them on your own boards, light to dark to grey. If your HOA has an approved color, bring us the sample or the guideline and we test it on your fence first. Whole-community runs are commercial staining, quoted as one job.
Around Greenville, Spartanburg, Greer, and Duncan we usually see 3 to 4 years on a fence, and 2 to 6 depending on the opacity, the sun, and whether it gets an occasional wash. The south and west faces go first. When the color has faded and the boards start to grey again, it is time.
Catching it then is a wash and a coat. Waiting until the wood is silver and checked is a restoration job.

In Greenville, Spartanburg, Greer, and Duncan we usually recommend every 3 to 4 years. It depends on the stain, the sun, and the wood. Some finishes run 2 to 6 years.
Spring and fall, with moderate temperatures (about 50 to 85°F) and lower humidity. We follow the stain maker’s temperature range. We also stain in cooler weather with oil-based products when the wood is ready.
In the Upstate, most stains dry and cure in 24 to 48 hours. Oil-based takes longer than water-based. Leave it alone while it cures.
For most wood fences here, oil-based stain is the better call. It soaks in instead of sitting as a film, so it is less likely to peel and crack in our sun and humidity.
If it has started to grey, weather, or mold, yes. We soft-wash aged wood before stain so the finish lasts. The wash is in the quote, not sprung on you later.
Stain as soon as the moisture is right. After mill oils dry out, wood starts to crack, twist, grey, and mold. We check with a moisture meter. Below 13% is ready for oil-based stain.
