When is the best time to stain a fence?

2026-02-28 · 4 min

Spring and fall are the easy answer. Moderate temperatures, less brutal humidity, fewer pop-up storms. The real gate is the wood, not the calendar.

As a rule of thumb, stain in the manufacturer’s temperature window (often around 50 to 85°F) and never on wood that is too wet. We check moisture on every estimate. Below 13% for oil-based.

You can stain in winter with the right oil-based product if the wood is dry enough and the temperature cooperates. You should not stain ahead of a wash-off rain or in blasting afternoon sun that flashes the solvents.

If you are trying to beat summer damage, book early. Weather moves jobs. A slot in March is worth more than a panicked call in July.
