The core math is area. Length times height times the number of sides being stained. A 100-foot privacy fence at 6 feet tall, stained on both sides, is 1,200 square feet of work, not 100 feet of hope. One side is 600. That single question, one side or both, swings a fence quote more than almost anything else, and it is the first thing any honest estimator has to ask.
The inputs the rebuilt calculator will ask are the same ones we ask in person: fence style, wood condition, color, length, and height. Style changes labor (pickets and shadowbox have far more edges and surface per foot than flat privacy boards). Condition decides whether a wash is in the price. Color and opacity steer product. Length and height set the area. Every input exists because it moves the real number.
The wash logic matters most. Aged, greyed wood cannot just be stained. It has to be washed first, or the new stain bonds to dead grey fiber instead of sound wood and fails early. The estimator is built to include a wash for aged or greyed wood automatically, the same way an in-person quote does. That is one reason our starting numbers can look higher than a competitor’s guess: the prep is already in it.
Now the honest caveats, the same ones the estimator will carry when it ships. A different stain brand than our standard can change material cost. No electricity on site adds about a $100 generator fee. No water access changes how the wash happens. Special requests (a second color, staining a gate to match, working around a pool schedule) change labor. And location plays in: a fence twenty minutes from the shop prices differently than one an hour out.
That is why any online number, ours included, is a starting number and not a contract. Wood hides things. Old paint under a board edge, rot at the post bases, a section that was replaced with a different species. The in-person look is what turns a starting number into a firm flat-rate quote.
